California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and U.S. Chief Technology Officer Aneesh Chopra announced the launch of the country's largest telehealth system.

The broadband network is separate from mainstream Internet broadband and will be dedicated to healthcare information. Organizers say the network will one day connect patients to hundreds of hospitals and clinics statewide.

The network's first two remote sites launched August 17 at Oroville Hospital north of Sacramento and CommuniCare Health Center in West Sacramento. During the next month, organizers plan to add another 50 sites including rural and urban groups.
