Long-term acute hospital system partners with university to combat case manager shortage

Recruiting, retention, and turnover are challenging in any profession. Case management is no exception. Experienced, competent case managers are especially hard to find, says Wendy De Vreugd, RB, BSN, PHN, FNP, senior director of case management for West Region at Kindred Healthcare, Hospital Division, in Westminster, CA.

Kindred and Samuel Merritt University (SMU) have formed a partnership in which Kindred recruiters select three SMU graduates to undergo a six-month intensive training and mentorship program. Upon completion of the program, each candidate will work as a full-time case manager in a Kindred facility. 

“We are giving them more intensive orientation training and then providing them a structure for meeting together, asking questions, receiving feedback, growing professionally, and developing skills in handling complex cases,” De Vreugd says. 

The three candidates live together in Orange County for the first month of the program. There they attend classroom training four days a week. During this time, the candidates learn Kindred’s policies and procedures.
