Shauna’s husband refuses to participate or discuss hospice options. He demands that the hospital refer Shauna to specific SNFs that he prefers. Being the high point of flu season, there are no beds available at those facilities.

Rich is a high-profile defense attorney with a national reputation. Because of his influence and reputation, Shauna’s managed care company does not issue her a notice of noncoverage and allows her to stay in acute care.

The hospital’s lawyers are also hesitant to cross Rich, and Shauna’s LOS exceeds weeks. Rich denies any SNF option that is not on his list of preferred facilities.
