President Barack Obama signed the Affordable Health Care for America Act into law Tuesday morning.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the bill Sunday night by a vote of 219–212.

The new law will:

  • Provide coverage to an estimated 30 million uninsured Americans
  • Require most Americans to have health insurance coverage
  • Add 16 million individuals to the Medicaid program
  • Subsidize private coverage for low- and middle-income individuals

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates this will cost the government $938 billion over 10 years. The CBO also estimates it will reduce the federal deficit by $138 billion over a decade.
