The U.S. House of Representatives voted 406–19 in favor of eliminating the antitrust exception for health insurance companies.
The Health Insurance Industry Fair Competition Act (HR 4626), sponsored by Tom Perriello (D-VA) and Betsy Markey (D-CO), aims to prevent price fixing, division of market territories, and bid rigging.
The House voted the same day the AMA issued a report criticizing health insurance monopolies and attributing increased healthcare costs to lack of competition. However the Congressional Budget Office and Congressional Research Service (CRS) say removing the antitrust exemption won’t lower healthcare costs. A CRS report issued last month said removing the antitrust exception might actually discourage competition.
