Professionals that use the care guidelines tend to be loyal to the product they were trained on. Because InterQual has been around longer than Milliman, it is the more popular product. In a recent Case Management Monthly poll, 81% of participants said their facility used InterQual, as opposed to 9% of participants who said they used Milliman.

InterQual originally designed its guidelines for nurses, according to Kenneth R. Rubin, MD, MA, MSHCM, FACEP, physician advisor at St. Francis Hospital–The Heart Center in Roslyn, NY. Thus, considering that the majority of professionals who use care guidelines are nurses (case managers and utilization nurses), it makes sense that they would prefer InterQual.

However, Milliman is gaining popularity. The company recently announced a jump from fewer than 200 clients in 2002 to more than 1,700 in 2009.
