The following article by Loretta Sandy, PhD, RN, CCM, an ER case manager at Grand View Hospital in Sellersville, PA, is adapted from HCPro’s newest resource for hospital case managers—www.CaseManagementMentor.com—a free blog dedicated to connecting hospital case managers to industry pacesetters, peers, and best practices.

A nurse case manager can be a real asset in the emergency room (ER). An ER case manager benefits patients, staff, and the hospital. The role is multi-faceted and requires superior skills in:

  • Quality
  • Education
  • Communication
  • Customer service
  • Negotiation
  • Creativity
  • Risk management
  • Knowledge and understanding of insurance requirements and regulatory mandates

This position also requires the ability to interact effectively with patients, families, insurance representatives, and caregivers both in the ER and the outpatient arena.

Visits to the ER may have one of several outcomes. Usually, patients are treated and discharged home with a plan. Alternatively, patients are admitted. This is where ER case managers can be most effective by improving the quality of care and preventing ER readmissions.
