Hospitalist programs are becoming increasingly popular because of their specialized knowledge of the hospital setting. Hospitalists are medical specialists who take over for primary care physicians when patients enter the hospital and oversee patients’ care from admission to discharge.
Case managers assigned to hospitalists may find that their jobs have become a little easier. Unlike physicians in independent practice who only spend a portion of their day practicing in the hospital, hospitalists are always on scene to discuss patient care. “They are so readily available,” says Lisa Flamm, RN, CCM, director of care management at Middle Tennessee Medical Center (MTMC) in Murfreesboro.
However, just because hospitalists are accessible doesn’t mean the relationship between hospitalists and case managers is perfect. Often, system issues prevent both parties from communicating effectively.
