The Department of Public Health released a report last week that says more than 300 patients in Massachusetts were victims of mishaps while staying in the hospital in 2008.
The majority of patients suffered from falls, while others were victims of medication errors, or had medical instruments left inside them after surgery. Officials involved in the study linked 19 deaths to the errors.
Mishaps reported per hospital ranged from zero to 25. The hospitals will not be penalized for reporting the errors, and officials say the number of errors reported per hospital should not be interpreted as a quality report card. Some hospitals have more stringent reporting processes than others, and the Department of Public Health urges hospitals to report these kinds of incidents.
