If you are not taking advantage of the expertise your physician advisor (PA) can offer to your case management team, you may be missing opportunities to improve communication and education within your facility.
Robert Wespiser, MD, a physician advisor and chief of staff at Berkshire Medical Center (BMC) in Pittsfield, MA, says a good PA should be able to wear many hats. Wespiser recommends hospitals use a physician advisor as a clinical expert; an educator to case management on how to work with physicians; a line of communication between case management, physicians, and hospital administration; and an overall advocate for patient care.
Wespiser suggests keeping three key points in mind when communicating with physicians:
- Nondeference to any one person caring for the patient. Make sure all information is available before you argue for any one side.
- Acknowledgement of others’ expertise.
- Collaboration. A collaborative approach will ensure that a patient’s needs are met on all levels.
