In an effort to decrease paperwork and give patients more control over their health records, CMS is kicking off an electronic records pilot program in Arizona and Utah beginning January 2009.
These health records will give consumers the ability to monitor their personal health records and provide them to physicians and pharmacists at the consumers’ discretion. In addition, Medicare will update the records with information from its claims database.
Medicare beneficiaries can choose between four companies—Google Health, HealthTrio, NoMoreClipboard.com, and PassportMD—to maintain their health records electronically. If the pilot program is successful, CMS hopes to expand it to other states and have around one million users by 2012.
