For almost as long as hospital case managers have existed, the question of whether they can still be considered card-carrying nurses has loomed large.
The problem is a universal one—and one that is somewhat charged by rhetoric—that many case managers who came to the field via nursing struggle to overcome. Although the question may be rhetorical, the answer is a straightforward “Yes!”
Although many social workers fill the case management role well, the clinical knowledge that nurse case managers bring to the position should not be discounted due to their title change.
In addition to their great communication skills and ability to think outside the box and on their feet, these advanced nurses bring many years of clinical experience to their case management roles.
