Hospitals have long-faced the troublesome problem of too many patients and not enough beds. Most hospitals resort to boarding patients in the ED until beds become available, but the American College of Emergency Physicians cites this practice as unsafe.

A recent study at Stony Brook (NY) University Medical Center reveals moving patients into upper-level hallways when they are ready to be admitted had better outcomes than keeping unadmitted patients in the ED.

The sickest patients always receive priority to enter the intensive care unit, but other patients, after being stabilized, can be moved out of the ED and into hallways in the upper levels of the hospital. This spreads out crowding, and some say, expedites patients into rooms because patients in hallways are more visible to nurses.
