After only seven months, state government officials announced Hawaii will stop giving universal health coverage to the 2,000 children enrolled in the program by November 1. A private payer will continue the coverage for the rest of 2008, and then the children will no longer be covered.

A state official said people were dropping their own health coverage so their children would be eligible for the subsidized plan. Governor Linda Lingle’s administration said budget constraints were some of the main reasons to stop the program. It costs the state about $50,000 a month to keep the children covered.

The coverage was free for children’s families except for a $7 co-pay per office visit. State officials argue that most of the children who enrolled in the program previously had health insurance and therefore were not in need of the program.
