In the United States today, about 90 million people are living with serious, life threatening illnesses, according to the Center to Advance Palliative Care. With this number expected to double in the next 25 years, access to palliative care is becoming more and more important.
Palliative care provides relief from pain, emotional support for patients and families, and complete care coordination.
However, the results of a report released last week by the Center to Advance Palliative Care and the National Palliative Care Research Center show access to palliative care varies widely by state.
The report gave each state a letter grade based on the availability of palliative care. Only three states received a grade of A (programs in 81–100% of hospitals) and three states received an F (programs in 0–20% of hospitals). Overall, the U.S. received a grade of C (programs in 41–60% of hospitals).
