The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that every year, two million patients contract a hospital-acquired infection while being treated for something else, and almost 100,000 patients die from these infections.

In order to prevent and monitor hospital-acquired infections, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation last week that will require California hospitals to screen high-risk patients for methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) within 24 hours of being admitted to the hospital, and report the infection rates to the state.

The law will go into effect next year, and the state Department of Public Health will use the reported data to publicly post infection rates for individual hospitals online beginning in 2011.
