This week’s tip, an ask the expert, is provided by Deborah Hale, CCS, author of Observation Status: A Guide to Compliant Level of Care Determinations.
Q: Is it acceptable to query the physician for clarification of present-on-admission (POA) conditions after the patient has been discharged from the hospital?
A: Yes, it is. There is absolutely no time limit as long as you have asked the question and obtained a written response prior to submitting the claim.
