The rate of heart-failure (HF) related hospitalizations tripled in the U.S. between 1979 and 2004, according to a study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
The study, published this week, found an increase from 1,274,000 HF hospitalizations in 1979 to 3,860,000 in 2004. The study also found 65-70% of HF patients were admitted more than once for HF related issues. Additionally, more than 80% of admissions were for people aged 65 or older with the bill going to Medicare or Medicaid.
The study predicts that as the American population ages, HF related hospitalizations will put an even greater financial strain on CMS.
