The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) recently developed an online tool to help patients locate federally funded local health centers. The health centers provide primary care, prescription drug coverage, prenatal care, immunizations, mental health care, and substance abuse treatment. The tool asks for the patient’s address, and gives the nearest health center locations along with driving directions and maps.
Health centers provided healthcare to more than 16 million individuals in 2007, according to a report released recently by HRSA. The centers provide care to the poor, uninsured, homeless, and migrant or seasonal worker population at an average cost of $559 per patient.
The centers provide care to individuals on a sliding fee scale based on a patient’s ability to pay. About 20% of the revenue comes from the federal health center grant. The remaining funding comes from state organizations, local organizations, philanthropic organizations, patient fees, Medicare, and other federal payers.
