On June 27, the American Hospital Association (AHA) launched a Web site with information about the CMS Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) program.
The RACs use automated software to identify Medicare overpayments and underpayments and are paid a percentage of the incorrect payments they identify and collect. The program was established by the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 as a demonstration in five states, but CMS will announce permanent RACs for all 50 states this summer. All states will have RAC programs by January 1, 2010.
The AHA Web site has a calendar of upcoming RAC events, Q & As, educational resources, and AHA and CMS news regarding the RAC program.
