When Mary E. Whitehead, BSN, MA, began developing the case management program for the Scripps Health System in San Diego in 1998, she envisioned building an integrated model and infrastructure of case management from the ground up. Through hard work and many challenges, Whitehead did just that.

Keeping her vision and goals for the program in her sights, Whitehead used a portion of surplus funds to create a systemwide leadership team. The team serves as a guide and support for each facility’s case management department within the organization and provides training to new employees.

She says her team’s main goals are to maintain standardization of practices and to clarify roles, policies, and procedures at each site. When a specific protocol or procedure must be different at a site, she ensures that it will fit in with the overall corporate strategy.

The systemwide leadership council meets monthly and consists of directors and managers from each site, as well as the members of the corporate team. In addition, Whitehead visits each site frequently.
