The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, along with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, recently released a Transforming Care at the Bedside (TCAB) toolkit.
The toolkit was created by 10 hospitals that graduated from the third phase of the five-year TCAB program, which was launched as a pilot project in 2003. The hospitals tested and developed best practice policies to involve staff, generate ideas, and set goals to increase excellence of care and efficiency.
TCAB is a nontraditional program that focuses on incorporating front-line staff and unit managers in transforming the way care is delivered. The goals of TCAB are to increase the time nurses spend in direct patient care to 70 percent; to improve quality, reliability, and safety of patient care; to create patient-centered care; and to improve nurse retention by improving workforce vitality.
