With so many case management departments understaffed and underfunded, a number of case managers around the country are starting to feel the crunch of trying to do their jobs with limited time and resources. Job pressures, such as dealing with many of the more difficult cases in a hospital, make it easy for case managers to start feeling burned out and tired of the hassles.
Case managers in the Scripps Health System in San Diego start their days feeling confident that they can make a difference, says Rose Turner, RN, BSN, ACM, case manager of systemwide logistics and case management at Scripps Health. Staff members there use technology to improve their daily work, finding more efficient ways to send out information to insurers and next levels of care.
A case manager in the Scripps system can open an EMR and send a referral to one of 90 skilled nursing facilities simultaneously, says Turner. Placing a complex patient may have once taken up to one week, but now it takes only 10 minutes in some cases.
