In an effort to collect unpaid medical bills, some hospitals are auctioning off their patients’ debt online.
Auctioning off the debt online creates a bigger pool of bidders, which can include the same collection agencies the hospitals normally work with in addition to other professional debt firms. When purchasing the debt, many firms and agencies guarantee the hospital will receive payment. That, along with the fact that auctions can increase the amount paid for debt, has some experts arguing that the agencies that purchase the debt will be more aggressive when trying to collect the payments.
This is one of many tactics some hospitals are employing to collect payment from the uninsured and underinsured. Two of the Web sites commonly used for hospital auctions, according to The Wall Street Journal, are http://arxchange.com/ and https://medipent.com/.
