CMS will launch a three-year pilot program beginning January 1, 2009, that will bundle Medicare Part A payments with Medicare Part B payments in Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Medicare Part A normally covers hospital services and Medicare Part B covers physician services. A spokesperson said the four states were chosen because administrative contractors there were prepared to participate in the program beginning in 2009.
The goal of the program is to reduce conflicting incentives that come from the current separate hospital and physician payment systems. CMS says the program will be a good experiment, but will most likely have to find several models that work in order to increase coordinated patient care.
