Many states are trying to cover more uninsured residents while dealing with smaller budgets, according to an article in The New York Times. Such is the case in Florida, ranked fourth in the nation for largest uninsured population, where Gov. Charlie Crist signed a bill into law Wednesday, May 21 that will provide low-cost, no-frills healthcare plans to a normally untouched population.
The plans will cost about $150 a month and will be available to any individual aged 19 to 64 who hasn’t had health insurance for the past six months and is not eligible for public insurance. The plan’s cost is 60% less than the average cost in Florida and insurers are prohibited from denying coverage to any individual because of age or health conditions.
The plans will include preventive services, office visits, screenings, surgery, prescription drugs, durable medical equipment, and diabetes supplies. However, the plans won’t include some things like podiatry and acupuncture. The governor says the plans will not increase taxes.
