A task force from the American College of Emergency Physicians, a specialty medical organization that represents more than 20,000 physicians, released a report that offers hospitals low-cost or no-cost solutions to avoid holding patients in the ED after they have been admitted to the hospital. This practice, called “boarding,” is the main cause of ED overcrowding, according to the report.
The report offers several solutions such as bedside registration, developing a “fast track” for patients with certain non-serious conditions, and several administrative procedure changes that promise to reduce overcrowding. A full version of the report and recommendations can be viewed at: http://acep.org/WorkArea/downloadasset.aspx?id=37960.
