A new study shows that, for the first time, more than half of all insured Americans are taking medicines for chronic health problems, according to The New York Times.
The increases can be attributed to several factors such as worsening public health, more medicines available for chronic conditions, more aggressive treatments by physicians, and increased advertising by pharmaceutical companies.
Broken down by demographic, the study found that almost two-thirds of women age 20 and older, one in four children and teenagers, 52% of adult men, and three out of four people 65 or older were taking medication for a chronic illness.
