A growing option for some Americans who can’t afford their high-priced prescription drugs is to buy them online, says an article from the San Francisco Chronicle.

Because the prices of brand-name prescription drugs are frequently regulated in other countries, they are often much cheaper than in the U.S. The FDA allows the practice of importing foreign drugs as long as the supply doesn’t exceed 90 days and that the patient can prove that he or she is under the care of a U.S. doctor.

However, federal officials still say that the practice is risky because of the increased chances of expired, counterfeited, or contaminated drugs.

The good news is that the American market for generic prescriptions is very competitive and seems to be getting more so with the $4 and $10 prescription plans offered by retailers Wal-Mart and Target.
