Last week, Wal-Mart announced the third phase of its low-cost prescription drug program saying that it would offer 90-day supplies of more than 350 generic medications for $10.
The company began a $4 prescription program for 30-day medication supplies in 2006. Almost all of the medicines under the $4 plan will now be included in the new $10 plan. Wal-Mart said it will also reduce the price of more than 1,000 over-the-counter medicines.
In response, Target announced that it would launch a $10 prescription drug program as well. The company also followed suit with Wal-Mart’s $4 prescription program in 2006.
Wal-Mart is the top retailer in the United States, while Target ranks fourth. Both stores are hoping that shoppers will find and buy other items in their stores while stopping in to fill their prescriptions.
