The economic slowdown is not only affecting healthcare costs for the uninsured. Many insured individuals and families are paying more out-of-pocket expenses for their care as healthcare costs continue to rise, and now account for one-fifth of the average household’s total spending.

Medical costs are soaring and coverage is being reduced, according to an article in The New York Times. These factors, combined with higher premiums and bigger deductibles and co-pays, means that many people with insurance will find it difficult to pay for healthcare ranging from a routine check-up to major surgery.
