At present, 47 million people, or 16% of the population, are uninsured. This number is projected to rise during the current recession, according to an article in The New York Times.
A study conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation predicts that for each percentage point that the unemployment rate rises, 600,000 children and 400,000 adults will be added to federal insurance programs for the low-income uninsured. That will mean that these programs will require more funding.
However, additional funding will be hard to come by, according to The Times, because for each percentage point that the unemployment rate rises, state general funds drop 3 – 4%. Because of this, many states are predicting budget deficits and therefore may cut parts of much-needed programs, such as Medicaid or the children’s health fund, as has been proposed by 13 states.
