In this month’s complex case, we look at a 70-year-old male patient who presented with wound care issues and was in an extremely debilitated state.
Taking care of his wounds with IV antibiotics was just the tip of the iceberg for a rural southern hospital.
The patient came into the hospital with his common-law wife, who was mentally disabled. After some initial investigation, the case manager discovered the patient was the sole caregiver for his wife, and they had no relatives to speak in the state. The wife couldn’t fully comprehend what was happening and was in no position to go home and take care of herself.
