A report released last week by The New York Immigration Coalition says that language assistance in hospitals for patients whose native language isn’t English has improved since state health officials started enforcing regulations in 2006, according to an article in The Washington Post.

The report surveyed 617 patients in New York City between October of 2006 and February of 2008. It showed an improvement from 29% of patients being able to communicate with hospital staff in their native language in 2006 to 79% after the regulations took effect.

In a city where approximately two million people do not speak English, language help in hospitals is critical to ensuring proper diagnosis and treatment. The report found that Spanish assistance has improved greatly, but languages such as Korean, Haitian Creole, Russian, Arabic, and Bengali still need more work.
