CMS will give 20 states total grants of $50 million over four years in an effort to improve access to primary care and reduce costly and unnecessary visits to the ED.

The states to receive the grants are Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Utah and Washington.

The grants are intended to help the states establish new community health centers, extend the hours of operation at existing clinics, educate beneficiaries about new services, and provide for electronic health information between facilities for better coordination of care.

CMS will give $26 million this year and the remaining $24 million in 2009.

More information about this program and the grantees can be found on the CMS Web site.
