Study concludes that hospitalists reduce length of patient stays

A recent study published by The New England Journal of Medicine reports that, on average, hospitalists reduce patient stays by 12%, about a half a day off an average four-day stay. In addition, patients treated by a hospitalist had slightly lower costs than patients treated by a family practitioner or general internist.
According to an article published by American Medical News, the study's overall results should give hospitalists more weight when bargaining with hospitals to receive financial support for their programs.
