Winning the lottery usually entails riches beyond one's wildest dreams, but a new lottery in Oregon offers a different definition of riches: health insurance. The state is offering a few thousand lucky winners the chance to win standard health coverage in the Oregon Health Plan, which covers most basic health services and medications. No time limit has been set for coverage.
Winners are being drawn now, in a process that could take a few months. The lottery was open to low-income residents who otherwise could not afford insurance premiums, but who are not low income enough to qualify for Medicaid. The lottery is a one-off event, and more than 80,000 people signed up since January. The state estimates that more than 600,000 of its residents are currently without health insurance.
