In hopes of gathering feedback from you on how your peers at other hospitals manage substance abuse cases in the ED, HCPro conducted a brief survey last week. Here is a snapshot of the results based on 54 responses from 53 hospitals:

There is clearly a gap in awareness, even among ED case managers, in knowing who the certified physicians are in your communities. On reimbursement, most hospitals send the patient to an outpatient center or doctor, but the patient almost always returns. Funding and resources are lacking, and there is interest among health plans and others to solve this crisis through better physician-patient alignment, and case management programs.

Does your hospital screen and treat patients with substance in your hospital? Yes: 64% No: 36%

Does your hospital refer patients with substance abuse to an outpatient setting, physician, or treatment center? Yes: 100%

In your opinion, does your hospital have an effective process to manage the follow up of these patients post-discharge? Yes: 14% No: 86%

Do these patients ever end up back in your hospital ED? Yes: 93% No: 7%

Do you have a list of physicians in your community certified to treat patients with opioid dependence? Yes: 24% No: 76%
