California hospitals must now report cases of community-acquired staph infections resulting in death or treatment in the ICU to state authorities, which the state says will allow cases to be properly tracked and monitored.
The new ruling applies only to cases acquired outside hospitals, which excludes 85% of MRSA incidences that are picked up by patients when inside the hospital.
The state hopes to collect data on gender, race, age, and geographic location of patients with such infections.
