A new study in Michigan has raised alarming questions about cancer care of patients in long-term care facilities after finding that late and unstaged incidents of cancer were far more common amongst nursing home residents than other elderly cancer patients in Michigan. Nearly two-thirds of the cancer patients from nursing homes were diagnosed with late or unstaged cancer, which is relevant in terms of treatment options and plans of care.

Although the results can partly be explained by the same reason many elderly patients are in nursing homes in the first place-their greater frailty-the researchers also raised the question of whether long-term care facilities place low priority on cancer-related care and are challenged in their ability to provide day-to-day care.
