One in five emergency department physicians know of a case where a patient has died due to having to wait too long for care, according to a new survey conducted by the American College of Emergency Physicians. The association surveyed 1,000 emergency care physicians in September.

The group's president, Linda Lawrence, MD, FACEP, told the Los Angeles Times that overcrowding in the ED is a nationwide crisis and that EDs no longer have the capacity to be the nation's safety net.

The Times article blames the crisis on dwindling inpatient beds, rising numbers of uninsured patients, and drops in reimbursement rates. It also says the situation is not helped by the nursing shortage and fewer physician specialists willing to be on call for emergencies.
