Patients at the nation's top-rated hospitals, as designated by the annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality and Clinical Excellence study, are 27% less likely to die than patients at all other hospitals, according to a study released by HealthGrades, an independent healthcare ratings organization. In addition, the study found that surgical patients had a 5% lower chance of complications if their surgery was performed at a top-ranking hospital.

HealthGrades identifies its "top" hospitals as the best-performing 5% of the nation's hospitals ranked in terms of mortality and complication rates for 27 procedures and diagnoses.
