Physician advisors (PA) play a critical role in enhancing the clinical credibility of case management to the medical staff. Key to the successful performance of this function is the understanding that a PA is primarily an educator of the medical staff, case managers, nursing staff, and support staff on the effective use of clinical resources using multiple approaches and venues to accomplish this function.
Breaking down the responsibilities of the physician advisor and helping them determine the best course of action to take with medical staff can be very challenging. During a recent HCPro audioconference, "The Role of the Physician Advisor in Case Management," speakers Robert J. Marder, MD, vice president at The Greeley Company in Marblehead, MA, and Wendy DeVreugd, RN, BSN, PHN, FNP, senior director of case management programs for Kindred Healthcare LTAC system, gave inquiring listeners their expert advice.
