The Washington Post recently highlighted the "small but growing" issue of people with chronic illnesses who are reaching the lifetime maximum amounts on their health insurance. When their benefit cap is reached, people are faced with healthcare costs that swiftly rack up, and many are turning to tactics such as changing jobs or even divorce, purely to be accepted into a new health insurance plan.
The standard benefit cap for many insurers is $1 million or more, and the number of patients reaching that milestone is growing each year. The Post says the issue is largely forgotten in the current healthcare debate, but that healthcare advocates are recommending Congress require insurers to set benefit caps as high as $10 million.
