A study published in The New England Journal of Medicine reveals that pharmaceutical companies often do not publish negative results from clinical trials they conduct to obtain approval for antidepressants. This practice misleads physicians and consumers about the effectiveness of the medications, says the study's authors.
Led by Erick Turner, a psychiatrist at Oregon Health and Science University and a former reviewer of data on psychotropic medications at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the study used results from 74 trials of 12 antidepressants registered with FDA between 1987 and 2004. According to the results, pharmaceutical companies published 37 of 38 trials that yielded positive results as determined by the FDA, but only 14 of 36 trials considered to have negative results.
