The Wall Street Journal reports several private health insurers, including Aetna and WellPoint, plan to end hospital reimbursements for any treatments that result from serious medical errors. Furthermore, the insurers will not allow their members to be billed for hospital errors.
CMS has already issued a new ruling, which becomes effective October 2008, regarding limited hospital reimbursement for preventable medical conditions and includes conditions such as pressure ulcers and falls. Next year, CMS plans to add hospital-acquired infections, blood clots in legs and lungs, and pneumonia contracted from a ventilator to the list.
