According to a new study in the January/February issue of Health Affairs, authors Ellen Nolte and C. Martin McKee report the U.S. ranks lowest among 19 industrialized nations in preventable deaths. Sponsored by the Commonwealth Fund, a private foundation campaigning to give people better access to improved quality healthcare, the report compared trends between 1997-1998 and 2002-2003 in deaths of people less than 75 years of age whose cause of death was amenable to healthcare. The authors noted that the 19 other countries dramatically reduced the incidence of preventable deaths in that time frame. To be considered a top performer, the U.S. would have to reduce the preventable death incidence rate by more than 100,000 deaths each year.
