The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released a new report detailing an 18.7% increase in Medicare spending in 2006, which is the fastest rate of growth in 25 years. Overall, Medicare spending from 2005 to 2006 increased by $63.3 billion.

Although general healthcare spending in 2006 increased, spending for Medicaid fell for the first time by 0.9%, due to an increase in dual eligible beneficiaries who were shifted into Medicare.
