A report by Modern Healthcare suggests many state hospital associations are considering a formal shift in billing practices to standardize not charging for medical errors. If a formal policy should be adopted, it would have a great effect on reimbursement restructuring and cultural changes within medical facilities. Pay-for-performance programs and, now, nonpayment for adverse events, are steps toward restructuring the payment process that it is hoped will ultimately lead to the establishment of better quality care.
