States' take on nonbilling practices for medical errors

A report by Modern Healthcare suggests many state hospital associations are considering a formal shift in billing practices to standardize not charging for medical errors. Although many U.S. hospitals do not request payment for procedures conducted to rectify hospital mistakes, there is still no formal policy in place from hospital associations.

If a formal policy should be adopted, it would have a great effect on reimbursement restructuring and cultural changes within medical facilities. Pay-for-performance programs and, now, nonpayment for adverse events, are steps toward restructuring the payment process that it is hoped will ultimately lead to the establishment of better quality care.
