In the December issue of Case Management Monthly, Karen Zander, RN, MS, CMAC, FAAN, gives a step-by-step guide to building a job description for physician advisors.
It's a role that she believes is underused and underdeveloped: "Physician advisors work closely with case management teams, playing a fundamental role in evaluating admissions, levels of care, and LOS. But despite their importance, the role is often vague and open to interpretation."
Here are Zander's quick tips for getting more from your physician advisor:
- Write brief statement defining the role of physician advisor
- Establish reporting structure
- List your minimum requirements and qualifications
- Set out additional experience, from practice status to handling payers
- Define skills particular to your hospital, such as knowledge of your patient care management software
- Determine deliverables, including LOS and readmissions targets
- Build a comprehensive list of duties.
